A historic pattern for magical nights: The Champions League Home Jersey 2026/27
A tribute to a true one-of-a-kind: VfB Stuttgart will take to the pitch in the UEFA Champions League 2026/27 in a very special home jersey. The classic white-and-red home jersey for Europe's premier club competition features the iconic “Tatabánya pattern” of the historic VfB jersey from 1988, intricately incorporated into the fabric.
The original red away jersey was worn in the 1988 UEFA Cup first-round away match against Hungarian side Bányász Tatabánya. After the final whistle, Guido Buchwald, Günther Schäfer and their teammates gave all their jerseys to the fans in the away end, meaning the complete set could never be worn again.
The special gesture was a tribute to the several hundred football fans from the former GDR who had joined the travelling supporters from Cannstatt in passionately supporting VfB in Tatabánya. The memorable night in Hungary was followed by a remarkable UEFA Cup campaign that brought VfB Stuttgart many more magical European nights and took the team all the way to the final against SSC Napoli.
The current UEFA Champions League home jersey brings the “Tatabánya pattern” back to life in a modern interpretation. A specially designed retro-style shirt number completes the look and perfectly matches JAKO's retro logo.
“Designing the UEFA Champions League jerseys is a tribute to our successful international history and to some truly special moments. Together with JAKO, we are bringing one of those moments back to life – reimagined for the next chapter of our journey through Europe,” says Karsten Petry, Member of the Executive Board for Marketing and Sales at VfB Stuttgart.
